Yesterday, on our nation's birthday, I was what you would call a "Real American." What I mean by that is...
I started out the day shopping for a theme party. First stop was the all-American Memorial City Mall. If driving out almost to the suburbs to one-stop-shop is not American, I'm not sure what is...
But then it got even more American when the BF and I decided to outsource our shopping. Yep, we headed over to the ghetto... the Chinese ghetto. Harwin, as it's called in Houston is home to some very diverse people and places. We got EXACTLY what we were looking for and then some by the time we headed to our American lunch.
And that my friends, was this:
Bubba's Texas Burger Shack, under Hwy 59 South just about a block from my condo! Bubba serves up the best Buffalo burger in the city and it was the perfect, and very American, lunch for the 4th of July. The flag was a bonus.
From there it was time to hit up the pool and after that it was over to a neighborhood bar for a few drinks and rounds of Connect Four. Booze and yards games are almost as American as bison and purchasing Chinese goods.
The day ended with none other than an Italian meal. Meatballs and Rotini (with zucchini from my Dad's garden!) and it too was fantastic.
All in all we did a few things true to the US and a few things copied or barrowed from countries that make up our melting-pot nation... And I can't think of anything more American than that.
Happy Birthday America!

Hot dogs for lunch on the boat on Lake Travis and hamburgers for dinner, then watching fireworks explode the whole drive back to SA....we too had a very American day :)
