My boyfriend lives in Houston. I live in Austin. This is not exactly the most ideal situation; however I must say we handle it well. One way we have made the distance thing seem easier is to meet halfway when there are weekends that one of us can't make the trip to the other. Halfway is Ellinger, TX. This cute little town is not exactly a booming metropolis so the choices for dinner or lunch are sparse. And by sparse I mean there are two. One is a pretty decent BBQ place that I'm sure the truckers love because of their $1.99 BBQ sandwich. I've had it once and while it is a great deal, it is not quite up to par with my snobby Salt Lick BBQ pallet.
So the only other choice is Hruska's. And a fabulous choice it is. They just finished a massive remodel that took the little Chevron gas station into a huge pit stop along HWY 71. Inside the sprawling stop are two big counters to order at, one for their famous kolaches and the other for all things from the grill. We usually do just hamburgers, but yesterday we chose a little bit of everything. My boyfriend had some kolaches, and we both got our usual hamburger order.
Let me tell you about these burgers. They are huge...big patties, big buns and lots of fresh veggies. One burger fills me up plenty. We met around noon yesterday, ate about 1230pm or so and I didn't even have dinner last night; that is how filling these things are!
To end the lunch date yesterday we ordered up a cinnamon roll. It was warm and delicious.
All in all, this place is far beyond the gas station exterior. It is a shop, a convenience store and above all else a scrumptious halfway date spot!

Twin -- if you're ever in Kansas City you MUST go to Oklahoma Joe's. It's the best BBQ you'll ever have (in Missouri, anyway) AND it's in a gas station!
